The 2007 Black Box, “Crime and Punishment”, inverts
expectation by portraying the hunted as hunter. In the words of Master
Carver Peter Calvesbert, “I imagine many people would love to see animals
as heavily armed as those that hunt them…just to even things up a bit. Yet
I still cannot imagine a deer or a bear would want to decorate their homes
with trophies of stuffed human heads! And yet I have to admit to loving
fly fishing, which I am sure is not to everyone’s taste, so I shall
lecture no more!” Inscribed within this signed and numbered multi-lid
limited edition are the names of two European football teams who will meet
in the final of the European Cup, Liverpool and AC Milan. Paul Frape,
owner and production director of Wimberley Mills, is a Liverpool fan, so
Peter say it’s his duty to support Milan. He will report the score on a
later model. Sal Caradonna, Harmony Ball’s financial guru, gets his first
ever mention on “Crime and Punishment”. “FW RIP” on the bear’s foot is in
reference to the demise of Fragile World, the miniature figurine line
founded by Martin Perry, HK’s former Artistic Director. The other foot
says “T” for trout next to a picture of a tree. This is a reference to the
“Broad Oak” lakes where Peter fishes. Finally on the base are the letters
MPSC, a reminder to Peter about an idea for a future piece (hint: it comes
from a fish joke). |
